Are You Really Hungry, or is it a Craving?

You hit the gym everyday, you are constantly trying to shed those extra kilos, you eat right or at least that’s what you think and you sleep on time but somehow you are still having a hard time achieving your fitness goals. Sounds familiar? Well, one of the reasons for this slow progress in terms of weight loss or getting fit could be that you are succumbing to those cravings. So let’s throw some light on how to differentiate between actual hunger and a food craving.

The problem is not your stomach; it’s that you are not reading into the signs correctly.

Cravings- You just ate a heavy lunch two hours ago but you just can’t resist the urge to eat some sweet or savory snack like a samosa, chips, a cheese toast, a piece of barfi, a slice of pizza or a delicious looking slice of chocolate cake with some hot chocolate sauce. Don’t allow this craving to get the better of you. If you feel like eating something specific, the odds are that you are not actually hungry. These sudden food cravings mostly arise from boredom, stress, an emotion and even thirst sometimes. Cravings will pass if you try and control. It might take a few minutes but they will go away.

Hunger- When your body requires fuel, it communicates this through hunger. Hunger is a feeling. There are different ways in which people experience hunger. Your stomach might feel empty or you might get ‘hunger pangs’ in the form of gurgur or the growling sound. Your brain might send signals such as headache, irritability or difficulty concentrating or focusing at something. So this is the time to eat something nutritious and not junk food, sugary drinks and candies.

Win over the cravings- Since hunger and cravings are two different feelings and once we learn to differentiate between the two, half your battle is won. Once you have identified that it’s a craving then there are various ways through which you can combat them. You can try and resist food cravings through various ways. If you are experiencing an emotional craving, it’s most probably due to stress. Fight this craving through these stress reduction methods which include taking a bath, take a walk or do some stretching exercises. Drink a glass of water before giving in. Follow the ten minute rule. Whenever you crave something, wait for ten minutes and it will subside or indulge in a very small portion of whatever you feel like eating.

Research suggests that completely eliminating certain food from your diet eventually make them irresistible and you crave them even more. You might end up giving into the craving but you might just end up overeating.

Remember that one meal does not determine healthy eating habits. What you put in your stomach during the entire day or over the course of a week does. So make sure that you indulge in mindful eating and maintain a balanced diet. Don’t compromise when it comes to exercising regularly. With time and a little extra effort you undoubtedly will be able to distinguish between real hunger and cravings and this will help you accomplish your fitness targets. So all the best in fighting those cravings……and fighting them hard!
